Behind The Lens: Sylvain Granier

Tell us a little bit about where you’re from and how you got into photography: I'm from France, from a little village located in Lower Normandy. I studied computer science at Lisieux and at Saint-Malo, but that never interested me. It was only upon graduating that I decided to get into photography. I had been fascinated with photography from a very young age. I’d regularly go to the movies and I’d flip through a good share of magazines regularly. Actually, practicing photography came about a little later, when my parents gifted me with one of my first cameras on my 20th birthday (my last year at Saint-Malo). My decision to get into photography followed shortly afterward. In only 3...

Allister Lee tells us who's Hotdog Furcoat//Allister Lee nous dévoile qui est Hotdog Furcoat: When did you first draw Hotdog Furcoat?I first drew Hotdog Furcoat in 2003 while living above the Guzel Cafe on Caledonian Rd in Kings Cross. I lived with my friend Dave who had been studying at Central St.Martins, but dropped out and was working the line at Pied De Terre. The first drawing of Hotdog Furcoat was with black Sharpie marker on vinyl sticker paper. Or perhaps on the side of this wooden box that was a receptacle for empty 10-pk Marlboro Lights that Dave kept around. Or perhaps it WAS drawn on the sticker, but THEN it was placed onto the side of that wooden box....
Chris Dyer presents Rebirth

Don't miss the opening of Chris Dyer exhibition at The Letter Bet - Friday, May 4th from 18:00 to 21:00 // Ne manquez pas le vernissage de l'exposition de Chris Dyer à La Lettre Bet - Le vendredi 4 mai de 18h à 21h: Why did you title your exhibition « Rebirth ?»Well, in this exhibition I will show a few of my newer paintings that have expressed my inner process of evolution, from the past year. A part of that process involved a lot of suffering and the feeling of killing a darker part of me. Though that shadow-mind-ego self can never fully die (it seems), I feel like I depowered it quite a bit and have been born into a new...

What inspired you to start this project?FEAT means - Featuring Emerging Artists Today. Our mission is to promote emerging visual art. We’re a distribution platform and an artist management company as well. It all started last summer as something very improvised. I decided to organize a vernissage with my brother; he had a series of photos that he never took the time to exhibit. The event was a huge success and it was then that we became aware of the lack of support there is out there for emerging artists. And...

We discussed with MORT about his collaboration with Raised by Wolves // Nous avons discuté avec MORT à propos de sa collaboration avec Raised by Wolves: You combine drawing, painting and woodworking to make your artwork. How did you decide to use these mediums? It sounds cliché, but like many artists, I started drawing when I was a kid. For the wood, it has always been a part of my life growing in the country. I have a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and a professional training in woodworking, so the link for me was obvious. I have been working on shaped canvases for a long time now. It gives the liberty to overcome the regular shaped canvas and really let my characters live freely in...

The power of scent with Dana El Masri

Smell makes up a large part of our existence. Different scents have become associated with different meanings and values by different cultures. The power of scent is immense, it can affect one's mood and energy and has also been proven to reduce stress and increase happiness. At the Letter Bet we use a range of scents in the gallery created for us by perfumer Dana El Masri, who grew up in Dubai and is now based in Montreal. From a young age she experienced scent as being a large part of her daily experience for herself and those around her. At one point she decided that making scents was a natural progression for her, as she easily saw the ways which certain scents connected people to past memories and positive energies....
